INSTEAD OF CONFISCATION OF ILLEGALLY ACQUIRED PROPERTY, THE ADOPTION OF THE LAW WOULD CAUSE CHAOS IN THE SYSTEM
We call on the Parliament to return the Draft Amendments to the Law on Confiscation of Material Benefit, adopted yesterday by the Government, to the public discussion.
This law received a negative opinion by the European Commission which points out that it is necessary to significantly improve it and organize public consultations. Not only did those consultations not take place, but the Government hid the document from the public for months, despite the promises of the line minister.
This law will certainly not bring results in practice and may greatly jeopardize the confiscation of property that is hidden abroad.
That is why the issue of compliance with the EC’s recommendation is important not only for progress in European integration, but also because Montenegro really needs a law that will allow for confiscation of tremendous property that was illegally acquired for months.
The adoption of this Law would cause chaos in the system instead of its improvement, and would enable many people to keep the hidden property, especially abroad.
That is why we call on the MPs not to adopt such Law because that would acquit many people of corruption, but to return it to the public discussion.
